A loose bearing races through the going train of a great clock — momentum, ramps, moving machinery, falls and nine wound stations.

The Unity WebGL player runs in a sealed frame. Its save crosses the opaque frame through one narrow first-party storage bridge.

The donor, and the machine built from it

The donor is named: Marble Madness, Atari, 1984. The rolling-race grammar survives; the great clock, bearing physics, geometry, art, sound and every station are original.

Donor grammarESCAPEMENTWhy it matters
An isometric marble race against timeA loose steel bearing racing through the works of a great clockThe genre's readable promise survives: master momentum before the clock reaches zero.
A rolling body with costly momentumFour-axis steering plus a grounded brake and waypoint speed capsSteering is continuous control, decisively different from BALLAST's launch-and-watch projectile loop.
Falls that cost race timeThe bearing returns to its last safe clockwork point while the wound par keeps runningA miss is recoverable but never free, so the player can learn the authored line inside one attempt.
Courses reveal harder movement grammarThree clock movements introduce ramps, barrels, pins, bridges, forks and the final escapementNine stations teach one control language without presenting the same obstacle nine times.
A finish gate ends each courseA jewelled goal pad records the clear, best time and next unlockThe terminal state is visible to the player, persistent across reload and independently testable.

What is running

A deterministic 120 Hz simulation behind a real Unity WebGL player, with procedural geometry, synthesized sound and save continuity.

  • Bearing dynamics120 Hz fixed stepMomentum, grounded braking, ramps, falls and recovery are resolved by the same deterministic simulation in tests and WebGL.
  • Nine authored stations3 movements · 9 seeds pinnedEach course carries its own waypoints, speed caps, par wind and moving clockwork rather than reskinning one track.
  • Procedural clockworkruntime meshes and materialsGears, bridges, rails, jewel lights and the bearing are built by the Unity scene code from original geometry.
  • Synthesized soundno external audio fetchesWind, impacts, ticks and clear tones are generated with the delivered player and require no network asset.
  • Save continuityopaque-frame bridgeA clear unlocks the next station; the page owns the save and hands it back to the sandboxed frame on reload.
  • Public acceptance telemetryread-only data-* stripThe driver can see position, velocity and the current waypoint, but it has no command that sets progress, time or phase.

What the browser actually did

A real Chromium player rolled every station, then separately proved start, movement, wind-out failure, restart and save reload. No phase or clock was injected.

12 browser tests passed · 9/9 station goals · 186.65s of cleared play · start → progress → fail → restart proven · save reloaded · 0 console errors
