The sheet

Judged at the size it gets used, not at the size it was drawn

Every candidate came out of the generator at 1024 pixels, where all twelve look competent. They were judged at 178 and at 64, where most of them stop being an otter. Then the picked one was used to condition every other pose, so the seats carry one creature instead of seven cousins.

Twelve candidate otter drawings laid out and judged at 178 pixels, the size the registry spot art is actually rendered at.

What it had to do

A cold viewer reads OTTER in one blink at real render size — never mouse, rat, cat, or blob.

One line, agreed before a pixel was drawn. Not "modern and friendly" — a test you can fail.

The kill list

Seven seats, and what was said about each

Two passed untouched. Three were condemned and redrawn — before and after are below at the real seat size, so you can make the call yourself. Two were condemned and parked, because their bytes were already hashed into an accepted delivery and swapping the art in place would have falsified the evidence. They are on this page for the same reason the failures are.

  • The clasp mark, in every page header

    PASS26–28px

Reads as two paws clasping — it is hands, not a creature face; zero rodent risk at 26px in both tones.

Kept. The new character produced no obviously superior mark, so the logo stands untouched.

  • The sleeping otter, registry spot art

    FAIL178px

The stroke-authored curl read as a big featureless dome with a detached small head. Not decisively otter.

Re-derived from the canonical character as a conditioned sleep-curl. Curl, wrapped thick tail, blunt whiskered muzzle and closed eye now read instantly.

The condemned sleeping otter at 178 pixels: a featureless dome with a small detached head.

The re-derived sleeping otter at 178 pixels: a curled body, wrapped tail, blunt whiskered muzzle and a closed eye.

  • The floating otter, shown while you wait

    FAIL160px

A thrown-back head left the face illegible even at 4x. A deflated read, not a decisive one.

Re-derived as a conditioned float pose, holding the estate pencil like a shell with a direct gaze. The traced module was deleted outright, not kept as a fallback.

The condemned floating otter at 160 pixels, its face illegible.

The re-derived floating otter at 160 pixels, holding a pencil, face and webbed feet legible.

  • The offline otter on the live edge

    HARD FAIL64×48px

Literally a featureless dome and a line. The ear and eye marks were invisible at seat size.

Replaced with a dedicated 64-unit cut of the same conditioned pose, on a filter-free plate — real drawings are never double-textured.

The condemned offline otter at 64 pixels: a dome and a line.

  • The walker inside the FOOLSCAP game

    HARD FAIL~22×26px

Angular head wedge, pointy snout, thin flicking tail, stick legs. It read as a rat.

Parked, then fixed the long way. Every byte of that bundle is hashed into an accepted delivery, so swapping the art in place would have falsified the acceptance evidence. It went back through the real contract machine as a new revision instead.

  • The diver on the UNDERTOW title plate

    WEAK~60px

A round-eared ellipse head with a rope tail read as a hamster holding a stick.

Parked under the same sealed-bundle law, then re-proved on the new bytes through its own driven-play spec.

  • The identity seal, console and passport

    PASS~28×52px

A flat-colour standing otter reads OTTER instantly — brown coat, cream belly, whiskers.

Kept. Its style sits off the pencil estate, but the gate here is legibility, and it passes it.

What the machine checked

Everything except whether it is any good

The deterministic half of this class really opens the delivered files, really shrinks them to every size you said you would use them at, and really measures what survives and how it stands out against its background. It caught a plate in this very commission that was a single flat colour carrying a recorded pass.

It also passes all five of the drawings the eye above condemned — because structure survived the shrink in all five. That is the boundary, stated on purpose: the machine settles the spec, the person settles the taste, and only the pick releases payment.
